Is Weight Loss Possible With Only Lowering Calories?

There was a time not long ago, when diets with low carbs made headlines everywhere. Suddenly one finds them missing from the main agenda of diet conscious people. What happened? The truth of the matter is that whatever name you give to a fad diet – Atkins or South Beach, the primary aim of all diets is just one. They all cut down calories. Low carb diets ensure low calorie intake with low input of carbs where as low fat diets cut down on calories by reducing fat consumption.

The biggest problem which dieters often face with fad diets is that there is an information overload. Variety of information comes in from various sources and at the end dieters are so confused – as to what to believe or who to believe. Especially when fad diet plans are authored by doctors, which Atkins and South Beach are – they can completely floor a layman. The issue is to find the needle in the haystack and cull out the exact information which will prove useful to you, from the jungle of information that is available.

To put it across in the simplest way, if you want to lose weight you have to take lesser calories than you burn. For instance, if you wish to lose a pound per week, you have to reduce your calorie intake by 500 calories. Weight loss can also be achieved by a combination of calorie reduction and increasing the amount of physical exercises which help in burning of calories and fat. But then, you cannot reduce calories by stopping to eat – as food also contains the vital ingredients your body needs as nutrients. This is the starting point of all confusion. While some diet plans ask you to reduce your carbohydrate intake, some others are pretty flexible about it. Remember, breads and simple sugars are not the only things which are rich in carbohydrates. Fruits and vegetables are also rich in carbohydrate content which is necessary for their nutritive value.

It is a fact that the body needs protein, fat and carbohydrates to function. While the exact requirement of each of these ingredients is still a matter of debate, according the US RDA, the percentile contribution in your daily food intake should be: 20-35% fat; 10-35% protein; 45-65% carbohydrates. To keep good health, you could make independent choices from these figures. Making informed choices also help your mental hunger in the sense that if you are keen on a low calorie diet, you are likely to eat low calorie foods which keeps you away from any feeling of deprivation. Interestingly, healthier choices of food are more often than not, low in terms of calories.

Here are some tips which are aimed to help you make healthier choices:

* Put a bar on foods rich in saturated fats.
* Eat a lot of fruits and vegetables.
* Whole grain foods are better that refined flours.
* Lean meats are the food of choice in lieu of meats which are rich in fat.

Whatever diet plan you choose to lose weight, remember it can help you accomplish your weight loss goals, unless you back it up with proper exercise. Though fad diets do not stress too much on physical exercises, please remember that you simply cannot lose weight, unless you do exercise. Physical exercise not only helps you lose weight, it also helps your heart become stronger, your bones and muscles healthier, all of which combine to make you feel and look better. While there is unanimous agreement on the benefits of physical exercise, research shows that several bouts of short-duration exercises are as effective as one-time long duration of exercise. For instance, you could do shot bouts of exercise lasting for about 10 minutes, several times in a day and you will get the same results. The other point to remember is that doing exercise does not mean that you have to be the owner of some professional gym equipment. Simple household chores like vacuuming can also help. Just remember to add some extra activity to daily routine.

Here are some tips to enhance your physical activities in a day:

* Learn to walk. Park your vehicle a few blocks away from your place of work and try to walk the rest of the distance.
* Befriend the staircase instead of the elevator.
* You could increase the intensity with which you do the household chores.
* Practice a few minutes of dancing every day.
* Grab those pair of shoes and go for a walk round the block.

Thus in conclusion, while fad diets can promise weight loss the most tempting and fashionable way, remember that the right weight loss strategy is when you combine low calorie intake with increased amount of exercise. Also do not expect overnight loss of weight. A couple of pounds per week are a safe way to go about weight loss program. You should not aim more than this, as it can prove dangerous. Foods rich in nutrients and low in calories, combined with a good and healthy lifestyle should be able to reach you to your desired destination.
