Symptoms of
Arthritis Depend on its Type
Symptoms of arthritis vary according to the type of arthritis you
have. Affecting different parts of the body, arthritis can be
caused due to multiple factors. While symptoms may seem similar,
there could be subtle difference. Given below are some of the
common symptoms of arthritis:
Ankylosing spondylitis, Marie-Strumpell disease, rheumatoid
spondylitis are the different names of a type of arthritis which
mainly affect the spinal joints. It can affect multiple organs of
the body including eyes, heart, lungs, skin, and gastrointestinal
tract. If you are affected by this type of arthritis, you would
also have low back pain and pain in the hip region. You would have
problem in expanding the chest. Pain in the neck, shoulders, knees
and ankles are common symptoms affecting many. Tiredness, low
fever and weight loss are also commonly seen. It is not rare to
see this type of arthritis around 30 years of age though it may
escape diagnosis till much later.
Bursitis is another type of arthritis affecting the hip, shoulder
and elbow. The knees, heel or the base of the big toe are also
victims of this type arthritis. Athletes and other sports people
are often affected by this disease as also people with poor
posture or out of shape. Pain and stiff joints are common symptoms
of Bursitis, which may be accompanied by inflammation and fels
warm to the touch.
Juvenile arthritis symptoms may be very similar to adult
arthritis. Manifested through pain, inflammation and stiff joints,
these symptoms have a habit of disappearing as often as they
appear. Children normally do not complain of these symptoms and
parents also seem to overlook the symptoms till they notice
limping and other activity avoiding traits in their children.
Osteoarthritis, the most common form of arthritis seen amongst
elderly people is caused by daily wear and tear of the bone
joints. The symptoms of this type of arthritis would vary based on
which body part is most affected. People with their fingers being
affected by the disease would not even know about its existence
till the X-ray shows degeneration of the cartilage. Pain and
swelling are standard symptoms of arthritis. Though the arthritis
condition can remain, osteoarthritis pain may subside with drug
therapy and exercise.
Gout is another type or arthritis caused by excessive amount of
uric acid in the body. Its symptoms include intense pain in the
joint, affecting the big toe usually. The joint may become red,
inflamed and warm to the touch. Gout can also affect the wrist,
ankles and knees. Gout may not return for several years at a
stretch, but excess uric acid in the blood if left untreated can
damage the bone beyond repairs.
A hyperactive immune system can result in rheumatoid arthritis
which begins with minor stiffness and pain. While initially it
appears infrequently, the symptoms can worsen with advancing years
and may appear more often. If diagnosed early, this form of
arthritis can be treated effectively.
If you suffer from any of the symptoms listed above, contact your
health provider immediately, as arthritis can be cured if
diagnosed early. Arthritis Foundation also provides more
exhaustive information on arthritis.
